Thank you for your interest in applying to Civic Synergy (POL 410), the Political Science Department and Hanley Democracy Center’s premier civic deliberation course. We are excited to read your application and to work with you this semester as we develop thoughtful, student-led policy proposals grounded in research, dialogue, and collaboration.
Throughout the semester, students will design and present their proposals to distinguished policymakers and community stakeholders at the federal, state, and local levels. Through structured deliberation, policy analysis, and teamwork, students will gain practical experience navigating the challenges of public problem-solving in a polarized political environment.
This semester, we will feature prominent guest speakers, including members of Congress, think tank leaders, policy professionals, and notable local leaders who are shaping public life in South Florida and beyond.
This semester’s focus is Democracy and the Future of Our Republic. Our discussions will explore issues such as elections, democratic institutions, political polarization, civic trust, public discourse, and the capacity of government to respond effectively to public needs. Each team will identify a specific policy issue, build consensus within politically diverse groups, and apply the negotiation and communication strategies taught in class to craft a shared solution.
At the completion of the course, student's will earn 1 credit towards their GPA under the course code POL 410. After your program acceptance, you will be issued a code to register on CaneLink and add it to your academic plan/calendar.
We look forward to reading your application and learning more about your interest in civic engagement, public policy, and constructive democratic leadership.
